Handle Food Safely in a Retail Environment
Handle food safely in a retail environment provides the required qualification to become a Food Safety Supervisor in retail and hospitality food businesses in New South Wales.
Entry Requirements
- There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
- Minimum age of entry is 15 years of age, unless otherwise stated.
- Students must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.
What you will need
- Access to a computer
- Reliable Internet connection
Duration
On average this unit takes 6-8 hours to complete.
You will have a maximum of 6 months (183 days) to complete the unit.
Practical placement
Students must be able to access a Retail or Hospitality food business to complete three shifts undertaking food handling tasks.
Practical Placement is to be independently arranged by the student with a suitable organisation.
Practical Placement can be undertaken as part of employment or as a volunteer.
NSW Specific Food Safety Supervisor Information
If you're aiming to operate as a Food Safety Supervisor in NSW, the NSW Food Authority has specific additional requirements.
These include:
- training in four key focus areas identified by the Food Authority:
• allergen management
• safe egg handling, cleaning
• sanitising practices
• Food Act offences.
- Hold a current NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (Valued at $30 and paid to the Government, we include this in the total cost of the NSW Course option).
EPEC Education is approved to offer the additional training and NSW Food Authority Food Safety Supervisor certificate and have included it in our NSW-specific course options.
Course Outcome
On successful completion of the course participants will receive an emailed/downloadable Statement of Attainment.
NSW-Specific Course Participants
In addition to your emailed/downloadable Statement of Attainment, you will also receive a physical copy of your NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate by post. This certificate must be displayed in your food business, as it is a requirement for operating as a Food Safety Supervisor in NSW.

This bundle meets the training requirements for Food Safety Supervisors in the hospitality sector across Australia.

Assessment
- Online assessment with a mix of question types.
- Complete a Third-Party Observation Report.
The third-party report is a form filled out by your supervisor or employer to confirm your ability to apply the skills you’ve learned in a real workplace setting.
Practical placement
Students must be able to access a food business to be observed performing food handling tasks appropriate to the workplace by a Third Party Observer.
Examples of a suitable Third Party Observer include:
- A Food Safety Supervisor
- A person with other Food Safety Qualifications
- A head chef or other trained food specialist
- A workplace manager, Supervisor or Director
Practical Placement is to be independently arranged by the student with a suitable organisation. Practical Placement can be undertaken as part of employment or as a volunteer.
